LONDON (Reuters) – God did not create the universe and the "Big Bang" was an inevitable consequence of the laws of physics, the eminent British theoretical physicist Stephen Hawking argues in a new book.In "The Grand Design," co-authored with U.S. physicist Leonard Mlodinow, Hawking says a new series of theories made a creator of the universe redundant, according to the Times newspaper which published extracts on Thursday.

"Because there is a law such as gravity, the universe can and will create itself from nothing. Spontaneous creation is the reason there is something rather than nothing, why the universe exists, why we exist," Hawking writes.

"It is not necessary to invoke God to light the blue touch paper and set the universe going."Hawking, 68, who won global recognition with his 1988 book "A Brief History of Time," an account of the origins of the universe, is renowned for his work on black holes, cosmology and quantum gravity.Since 1974, the scientist has worked on marrying the two cornerstones of modern physics -- Albert Einstein's General Theory of Relativity, which concerns gravity and large-scale phenomena, and quantum theory, which covers subatomic particles.

His latest comments suggest he has broken away from previous views he has expressed on religion. Previously, he wrote that the laws of physics meant it was simply not necessary to believe that God had intervened in the Big Bang.He wrote in A Brief History ... "If we discover a complete theory, it would be the ultimate triumph of human reason -- for then we should know the mind of God."

In his latest book, he said the 1992 discovery of a planet orbiting another star other than the Sun helped deconstruct the view of the father of physics Isaac Newton that the universe could not have arisen out of chaos but was created by God.

"That makes the coincidences of our planetary conditions -- the single Sun, the lucky combination of Earth-Sun distance and solar mass, far less remarkable, and far less compelling evidence that the Earth was carefully designed just to please us human beings," he writes.Hawking, who is only able to speak through a computer-generated voice synthesizer, has a neuro muscular dystrophy that has progressed over the years and left him almost completely paralyzed.

He began suffering the disease in his early 20s but went on to establish himself as one of the world's leading scientific authorities, and has also made guest appearances in "Star Trek" and the cartoons "Futurama" and "The Simpsons."

Last year he announced he was stepping down as Cambridge University's Lucasian Professor of Mathematics, a position once held by Newton and one he had held since 1979.

"The Grand Design" is due to go on sale next week.

The Seven Days Of Creation

The Bible begins with the creation of the universe: "In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth" (Genesis 1:1 NIV). This single verse describes the actual transformation of invisible energy into all of the fundamental physical matter (as summed up in Albert Einstein's famous E=mc² equation) that would be formed into stars, planets and everything else - including us. Scientists now estimate that the great event took place approximately 15 billion years ago.
The next verse describes the earth after its creation, long after the creation of the universe: "Now the earth was [or became] formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and The Spirit of God was hovering over the waters" (Genesis 1:2 NIV). Scientists estimate the age of the earth to be about 5 billion years old - leaving an estimated 10 billion years between Genesis 1:1 and 1:2.
There has been a tremendous amount of disagreement between science and religion, each side armed with its own obvious facts to refute the other. People of science and religion need not disagree so often if they would realize that their different observations are the result of each looking only at opposite sides of the same coin. The contradictory evidence is actually an illusion, caused by omission, which virtually guarantees that alone, either scientific theory or religious doctrine can only be half-right in their understanding of the creation of the universe or the origin of humanity. Together however, the picture is complete and harmonious.
We all realize that God was Creator, but how often do we consider what was involved in that creation? God was a chemist, a physicist, an astronomer, a biologist. He was most certainly an artist, a maker of all of our world's beauty. He was the lawmaker of all of the unseen forces that make "nature" orderly and predictable.
The universe as it exists was not produced by some cosmic accident. The conditions of creation were intricately planned and considered. A mindless uncontrolled "big bang" would result in destruction and chaos, not the life and order we now see.
On the other hand, a great initial expansion (explosion) of physical matter that had just been transformed (created) from pure energy (from a physical point of view, literally nothing), followed by orderly development (from natural laws put into force beforehand by a Creator) of stars, galaxies and everything else, is reasonable and logical. It satisfies both religion and science.
The First Day
The first recorded Words of God that we have are "Let there be light" (Genesis 1:3 NIV). The sun was already shining brightly, but God made the earth's thick new atmosphere allow diffuse light to penetrate to the surface. And so it was that the light was made separate from darkness. The first day of earth's creation was literally the first "day" as someone on earth's surface would experience it - a period of opaque light, and a period of darkness. (Genesis 1:3-5)
The Second Day
The separation of the waters. There was yet no liquid water, no oceans. All of the water was in the form of a vapor, a worldwide super-fog, extending a number of kilometers/miles up from the very hot (above the boiling temperature of water) bare-rock earth's surface (the earth's core remains molten right to the present day). God's "hovering over the waters" in verse 2 describes His being above that gaseous-water atmosphere, not a liquid ocean. God then caused most of the water to condense onto the cooling earth which simultaneously formed a whole-planet ocean and cleared the sky. (Genesis 1:6-8)
The Third Day
The first appearance of dry ground. The further cooling of the surface set in motion a process of natural contraction, uplifting and motion of the crust (the process continues today, called "plate tectonics"). The earth changed from a smooth one-level molten "cue ball" to a planet with an irregular surface with ocean basins and continental landmasses. With dry ground available, the first plants were made to grow in great abundance. (Genesis 1:9-13)
The Fourth Day
With the sky now clear, the sun, moon and stars were dependably visible. They were to "serve as signs to mark seasons and days and years." The sun marked the day (sunset to sunset), the moon the month (new moon to new moon), and the stars the seasons (constellations are seen in particular seasons e.g. "Orion" is visible in winter in the northern hemisphere, which is summer in the southern hemisphere). (Genesis 1:14-19)
The Fifth Day
Great numbers of birds and sea creatures. God blessed them and said, "Be fruitful and increase in number and fill the water in the seas, and let the birds increase on the earth." (Genesis 1:20-23)
The Sixth Day
Vast numbers of land animals. Man. From the man, woman (humans today are just now discovering how to genetically alter fertilized embryos, and even to create one human from the tissue of another - known as "cloning"). (Genesis 1:24-31)
The Seventh Day
The Sabbath Day. "By the seventh day God had finished the work He had been doing; so on the seventh day He rested from all His work. And God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it He rested [or ceased] from all the work of creating that He had done." The day that is the basis for The Fourth Commandment. (Genesis 2:2-3)
The question of whether the seven days of creation were literal days, or symbolic of stages of development is actually irrelevant to the undeniable reality that Creation happened. The observable universe, the earth beneath our feet, and every one of us exist. Who needs more proof than that?

Many of us get confused when they received ASB yearly statement. So with some help from Cari.com.my forumers, I have compiled the way to calculate ASB dividend and bonus.

Calculating Dividend

ASB dividend is computed monthly but it will be distributed annually. Let say PNB have declared that this year dividend rate is 7%. This is how to calculate your dividend:

monthly dividend income= 0.07 / 12 x minimum balance
Annual dividend income ( this will be shown up in you balance) = sum of monthly dividend for that year

Calculating Bonus:

Bonus is given to minimum monthly bonus for the past 10 years (120 months). Bonus will be most beneficial to those who have been saving for at least 10 years. Let’s say ASB bonus is 2% this year.To calculate Bonus:

monthly bonus = 0.02/120 x minimum monthly balance

When i said monthly balance, it is not this year’s months only, but including the months’ from the past 10 years.
this year bonus = sums of monthly bonus for the past 120 months

Example: Let’s say that you just invest for 4 years (48 months) and your average monthly balance for the past 48 months is $1000. So the bonus will be 48 x ( 0.02/120 x 1000) = $8

So that’s how to calculate the bonus and dividend for ASB.

KUCHING: History will be made in the Dayak film industry when ‘Saloi the Movie’, the first Iban feature film, makes its nationwide debut in cinemas this May.The film, adapted on the Iban folklore of a clumsy and error-prone man named Apai Saloi is set in the rural modern era but instead of focusing on Apai Saloi, the film is based on Saloi (the son) instead.

Depicting Saloi’s journey as a young man from the rural longhouse trying to make it big in the city, the film deals with hardship, cultural shocks and various migrating issues usually encountered by rural folks moving in to the big city.

In the movie, Saloi is a bright lad who tries to disassociate himself with the ridicule and stupidity usually branded towards his father. Being an outcast in the village, Saloi decides to leave the longhouse life in order to prove to the villagers that he can succeed in the big city.

Starring newcomer Julius Ejau as Saloi, the film also features Blucewalker Breday who assumes the role of ‘Apai’. Supported by another 20 to 25 extras and supporting casts, Blucewalker is the only one with previous acting experiences as his work can be seen in dramas shown in RTM television series.

Speaking at the film’s soft launch at Kuching Park Hotel on Sunday, its executive producer Benny Zach said: “The film has a romantic comedy touch to it but most importantly with a little bit of love and hilarity, it is set both featuring the city and the longhouse background,”

“Most importantly, the moral of the film is to teach the Iban community to be positive and to destroy all negative thinking on all things especially of those not to their understanding,” Benny explained.

He also said the film was shot entirely in Sibu and at Sungai Durin (for the longhouse scenes). The filming only took 15 days to wrap up and the ballpark figure was estimated to be more than RM100,000.

“The first official screening (launch) of the film will be in Bintulu on March 23. Hopefully the film will hit the cinemas by May and it will be shown all over the state, Sabah and also in Johor Bahru,” Benny added.

The director of the movie is Monica Jeff of the ‘I Love Sarawak’ fame – a short feature film which won Best Cinematography in short film category at the Astro Kirana Film Festival in 2008.

Relatively new to the filming industry, Monica’s already strong credential included her being part of the scriptwriter team for the Manjalara TV series shown at TV3 and also Honeyz which was aired on TV2 (RTM).

Apart from that, Monica also wrote scripts for Astro productions and has also worked as a scriptwriter for Datuk Yusuf Haslam and Murali Abdullah, both heavyweights in the local film industry.

The film would also be presented in high definition and it was the brainchild of local film enthusiast Dato Sri Edmund Langgu.

In his speech during the ceremony, Langgu, a former deputy federal minister and who is the main advisor for the film said: “I am glad to know that we have young generations of avid film makers. It is not easy to make a Dayak film as we have to create a good storyline that will reflect the lifestyles and cultures of the Dayak community.

“At large, we are not yet ready for a heavy duty kind of movies based on modern trend such as (local Malay blockbusters) Rempit or Impak Maksima. Creativity, desire, motivation, focus, sensitivity, self discipline, patience and determination are a few necessary attributes one must have to become involved in the art of filmmaking.”

The film is a production of Allen Tinggie Trading Sdn Bhd spearheaded by Joseph Allen Tinggie and Hereward Gramong. The company is a registered member of the Dayak Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

KUCHING: The dream of bringing home the remains of Sarawak Rangers and trackers who were killed in the peninsula and Singapore during the Emergency is now a step closer to realisation with their final resting place identified.‘Ops Ngerapuh’ organising chairman Lt Col (Rtd) Robert Rizal Abdullah announced yesterday that Sarawak Economic Development Corporation (SEDC) chairman Datuk Talib Zulpilip had helped to locate a piece of land for the Heroes’ Monument and the cemetery near Kota Sentosa.

“A 15.4-acre state land has been identified by the Land and Survey Department as the site for the Heroes’ Monument where the remains of the Iban trackers and Sarawak Rangers killed and buried in Semenanjung and Singapore during the First Malayan Emergency will be relocated to,” he said in a press statement yesterday. Robert said according to Talib, who played an important role in helping the committee realise the plan, “the next phase is to get it officially approved and alienated to SEDC for that purpose”.

“The proposed design and layout has also been made. It will have to go through the committee before it is approved,” said Robert.

He said a fund-raising campaign would be launched and he hoped the states where they had given their lives to would also contribute to the fund.

Any remaining balance from the fund would be used to improve the welfare of trackers and members of the Sarawak Rangers still alive today, said Robert.

He said part of the fund-raising effort was the sale of multi-coloured T-shirts now in progress. According to him, a percentage of the sale would go to ‘Ops Ngerapuh’ Fund. Those who wish to make orders can call Lian Hun at 016-8950203.

Robert was inspired to organise the return of the dead Sarawak Rangers and trackers by the late Lance Corporal Ungkok Jugam, a Sarawak Ranger whose grave was found on a patch of green on a road shoulder in Jalan Langgar, Alor Setar last year.

Ungkok, who is from Lubok Antu, had served at the height of the first emergency in Malaya from 1948 to 1960. He was reburied in a more dignified grave at St Michael’s Catholic Church at Jalan Sultanah on April 28, 2009.

Since learning of Ungkok’s case, Robert had tracked down 21 Sarawak Rangers and trackers, including one border scout. They are buried at Batu Gajah Christian Cemetery, Cheras Road Cemetery, Kamunting Road Christian Cemetery, Batu Gajah Christian Cemetery and Kranji Military Cemetery in Singapore.

Robert’s plan had received the support of the state’s leaders, including Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Alfred Jabu Numpang.

How to make Manok Pansoh....

Resepi rumah panjai-menoa aku and my longhouse

Manok(Manok is Chicken) Pansuh is the Dayak sarawak(iban,bidayuh and the org Ulu) food and to cook the chicken, the bamboo should log sealed side up, over burning wood or charcoal, for 30 minutes and more than 30 minutes.Where you can find manok pansoh?Come and visit sarawak there is only in Sarawak,Borneo.

1kg meaty chicken pieces
1 local brinjal, skinned and cut into wedges
1-2 lemongrass, bruised
20g bungkang leaves (can substitute with daun salam or dried bay leaves)
20g ginger, sliced
10g red chilies, seeded and sliced
1 tsp salt and Bamboo log

Combine all the ingredients, except the last two, in a mixing bowl and set aside for 10 minutes. Stuff into the bamboo log and seal with the tapioca leaves of banana leaf.
Cook the chicken by standing the bamboo log sealed side up, over burning wood or charcoal, for 30 minutes.

LABUAN : Kumpulan Highway dari Kampung Rancha-Rancha mengungguli pertandingan muzik akustik sempena Karnival Kokurikulum Universiti Malaysia Sabah, Kampus Antarabangsa Labuan (UMS-KAL) 2009 yang berlangsung di Dewan Utama, baru-baru ini.

Dengan kemenangan itu, Highway membawa pulang hadiah wang tunai RM300 diikuti naib johan kumpulan Never Again yang memenangi RM200 dan ketiga kumpulan Basing Tanjung meraih RM100.Dalam pertandingan tarian etnik Sabah, johan disandang oleh kumpulan Addat Banan Ka’omboan yang mempersembahkan tarian Daling-Daling untuk memenangi hadiah sebanyak RM400, naib johan Tari Bayu dengan tarian Mengilok meraih RM300 dan ketiga Anggaling Sumayau dengan tarian Limbai mendapat RM250.Kumpulan Addat Banan Ka’omboan turut memenangi hadiah pereka tari terbaik untuk membawa pulang RM100.Sebanyak 12 pasukan menyertai pertandingan muzik akustik manakala tarian etnik Sabah disertai 10 kumpulan.

In Peninsular Malaysia, the States of Perak, Selangor, Pahang and Negeri Sembilan formed themselves into a loose federation known as the Federated Malay States (FMS), with a system of centralized government. These four states, together with the states of Kedah, Perlis, Kelantan, Terengganu and Johor, had an administration link with the British Straits Settlements of Penang, Malacca and Singapore, through the High Commissioner for the FMS being also the Governor of the Straits Settlements.  

Following the end of World War II and the period of British military administration, Malacca and Penang were joined to the nine Malay states to form in 1946, the Malayan Union; this being superseded by the Federation of Malaya, in 1948. The Federation of Malaya became an independent country, with a constitutional monarchy, on 31st August 1957.

On 16th September 1963, Malaysia became a federation comprising the 11 states, as abovementioned, and the states of Singapore, Sarawak and North Borneo, (now known as Sabah). Singapore left Malaysia in August 1965, thus leaving 13 states, of which Sarawak and Sabah are jointly known as East Malaysia, and the remaining 11 states are commonly referred to as Peninsular Malaysia.

Kawasan perairan Perak dan Selangor dikenal pasti sebagai laluan yang sering digunakan oleh sindiket penyeludupan manusia untuk membawa pendatang asing ke beberapa negara lain sejak hampir sembilan bulan lepas.

Komander Pasukan Gerakan Marin Wilayah Satu ACP Zainul Abidin Hasan berkata ini mungkin kerana perairan itu terletak tidak jauh dari kawasan sempadan dan perairan antarabangsa.

Beliau berkata kebanyakan rakyat asing yang mempunyai pasport sah ke negara ini, dipercayai menggunakan Malaysia sebagai transit untuk menyeludup keluar ke negara lain terutama Australia.

"Berdasarkan tangkapan rakyat asing di kawasan perairan yang dikawal oleh pasukan Gerakan Marin Wilayah Satu, Perak dan Selangor mencatat jumlah yang tinggi berbanding perairan Kedah/Perlis dan Pulau Pinang," katanya kepada pemberita pada majlis berbuka puasa bersama media di atas bot marin di kawasan perairan Pulau Pinang malam tadi.

Beliau berkata khidmat sindiket berkenaan juga sering digunakan rakyat dari Iraq, Afghanistan dan Pakistan yang ingin ke negara lain.

"Kami telah menahan 28 rakyat Iraq, 65 dari Afghanistan dan 24 dari Pakistan dalam dua operasi sepanjang tempoh Januari hingga kini," katanya.

Sementara itu, Zainul Abidin berkata tugas meronda dan mengawal keselamatan kawasan perairan negara berjalan seperti biasa walaupun pada bulan Ramadan dan Hari Raya Aidilfitri.

Beliau berkata sebanyak 12 bot marin dengan tiga pegawai dan 69 anggota terlibat dalam rondaan menjaga perairan di Wilayah Satu sepanjang tempoh itu. BERNAMA

Istak dihasilkan melalui pemilihan malt (bijirin biasanya barli yang diperam) paling berkualiti dan dikeluarkan menerusi syarikat yang berpengkalan di Iran, Arpanoosh Industrial Co. yang berpangkalan di Iran. But further study has shown that this new virus is very different from what normally circulates in North American pigs. It has two genes from flu viruses that normally circulate in pigs in Europe and Asia and bird (avian) genes and human genes. Scientists call this a "quadruple reassortant" virus.

Aku baru terbaca mengenai tulisan Khai di blognya mengenai Facebook. Selepas selesai membacanya, aku rasa terpanggil untuk berkongsi cerita mengenai Facebook ini. Walaupun bagi sesetengah orang cerita ini cerita lama, tetapi apa salahnya aku kongsikan sekali lagi sebagai info tambahan.

Ramai yang suka menggunakan laman web sosial seperti MySpace, Frienster, Taggeddan juga Facebook untuk mencari kawan dan juga member lama di ruangan maya. Adayang menjadikan laman web sosial sebegini sebagai satu tempat untuk mereka berkarya, tidak kurang juga yang menjadikannya sebagai satu tempat dalam memperjuangkan wadah dan pemikiran masing-masing. Yang penting, ianya PERCUMA dan itulah yang aku ingin kongsikan. Lamab web sosial sekarang tidak ubah seperti blog.

Dengan menggunakan umpan yang paling senang iaitu PERCUMA, berduyun-duyunpengguna Internet akan berusaha untuk mendapat satu account bagi diri masing-masing.

Apatah lagi kalau username mereka masih belum diguna pakai oleh orang lain.Betul`kan? Jadi sebagai pembuka kata, hari ini kita akan berkongsi sedikit info mengenai laman web sosial yang sedang meletup iaitu FACEBOOK.

Sebenarnya, ada sebahagian “dark side” yang tidak diketahui oleh berjuta pengguna internet di dunia ini mengenai Facebook. Ini adalah satu konspirasi teori yang telahpun menjadi fakta benar dan apa yang boleh kita lakukan sekarang adalah “lihat” dan “terus melihat”. Jika ada di antara kita yang telah meletakkan butir-butir peribadi sebenar di dalam Facebook, maknanya tiada apa lagi yang kita boleh lakukan.

Sedarkah kita siapa sebenarnya di belakang Facebook?Sedarkah kita bahawa semua data-data yang kita berikan itu telahpun disimpan oleh pihak CIA?

Mereka boleh mengakses semua mengenai kita dan dengan mudah mendapat semua butir-butir diri tanpa perlu bertanya kepada kita, bos kita, kawan-kawan kita, pihak universiti kita, keluarga kita dan banyak lagi sumber at anytime they want!!

Dan yang lebih menyedihkan lagi, ramai dari kita terutamanya rakyat Malaysia sudahpun memberikan 100% info dan butir-butir diri mereka dengan TEPAT. Apabila ditanya,mereka dengan mudah menjawab, “nanti kalau member lama atau member sekolah inginmencari kita… senang sikit!”

Malang sekali bukan itu yang berlaku. Dalam pada keghairahan yang kita sendiri wujudkan terhadap Facebook, kita sedikitpun tidak membaca dasar ataupun polisi yang Facebook letak di dalam laman web mereka.Yang kita tahu hanyalah PERCUMA dan sikap ramah dan jujur kita itulah yang bolehmemakan diri kita sendiri sebenarnya.

Mari kita lihat apakah yang Facebook nyatakan mengenai butir-butir peribadi yang kita sendiri masukkan dalam account Facebook kita:

Facebook yang telah menjadi kegilaan pengguna internet adalah tempat yang palingmudah untuk CIA mendapatkan data peribadi mereka dengan PERCUMA. Bagi pengguna kebanyakan (mereka yang bukan extreme), mungkin ia tidak akan membawakeuntungan kepada pihak CIA tetapi bagi mereka yang mempunyai “title” sebagai “professional” seperti seorang doktor, peguam, PROFESSOR, scientist dan yang seumpamanya… inilah MANGSA CIA yang sebenarnya.
Mengapa?
Kerana sama ada kita percaya atau tidak, ramai golongan professional yang meletakkan segala butir-butir mengenai diri mereka dengan lengkap bagai nak rak dengan alasan mereka mempunyai kawan di seluruh dunia dan masing-masing tidak mahu “kalah” dalam menceritakan semua kejayaan dan kegiatan yang telah mereka kecapi. Bukankah itu semua adalah PRIVACY diri sendiri?
Pernahkah kita/mereka fikirkan mengenai RISIKO yang mereka letakkan ke atas dirimereka sendiri?- Habis semua data mengenai aktiviti dimasukkan.- Habis semua data mengenai achievement diri dimasukkan.- Address, hometown, phone number, clubs, jobs, rekod pendidikan, interests, dailyschedule…. habis diberikan begitu sahaja. Itu semua akan disimpan oleh pihak CIAsebagai data yang boleh dijadikan statistik untuk kegunaan mereka pada masa hadapan. Malah, maklumat mengenai keluarga juga dimasukkan dengan selamba.
Halo…Kita marah bila orang mengambil tahu hal kita.Kita marah bila orang mencungkil privacy kita.Tapi kita tidak sedar yang kita telah “berikan” semuanya di dalam Facebook kita!Ikut percakapan kasar orang di warung kopi, bunyinya memang menarik. Ini dialognya:
Esok kalau katakan mereka hendak menyerang Malaysia, mereka sudahpun tahudimanakah golongan bijak pandai di Malaysia ini berada/tinggal. Sebelum dia serang,mereka akan bunuh dahulu golongan bijak pandai ini…. tiada apa yang tinggal.Bukankah semua info yang mereka perlukan sudahpun ada dalam tangan mereka?Facebook best!

History:
Sir James Brooke 1803-68, rajah of Sarawak on Borneo, b. India, of English parents. After active service in Burma (1825-26), he retired (1830) from the army of the East India Company. He sailed (1838) for Borneo, and on the west coast there he assisted (1840) Muda Hassim, uncle of the reigning sultan, to suppress rebel Dyak tribes. For his services he was made (1841) rajah by the sultan of Brunei and proceeded to create a government and to put down head-hunting and piracy. He was given a baronetcy by the British government and entrusted with the governorship (1847-57) of Labuan. He was succeeded by his nephew, Sir Charles Anthony Johnson Brooke, 1829-1917. Sir Charles extended the authority of the government to all parts of the country and abolished slavery. He was succeeded by his son, Sir Charles Vyner Brooke, 1874-1963. Sir Charles was forced out of Sarawak in 1942.

My diary:
Extant buildings have been left by dynasty brooke. This buildings is were created historic spot. My first time visit Kuching in year 2004 and I had been visiting several places such as museum Sarawak,Magerita's city,water front kuching and others place . What make me surprised Rentap and his partner afford attack that stronghold although fairly is high and each wall corner having cannon,however Rentap and his partner successfully brought Allan Lee's head and this cause james brooke slashed Rentap is pirate.

KUCHING 17 Mac - Pemimpin parti politik di negeri menyambut baik pengguguran tuntutan ke atas Limbang oleh Brunei Darussalam selepas Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah dan Perdana Menteri, Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi menandatangani Surat Pertukaran di Istana Nurul Iman pada pukul 12.05 tengah hari semalam.Menurut mereka, langkah itu akan menjadikan usaha kerajaan memajukan Limbang akan berjalan lancar sekali gus memberi manfaat kepada kedua-dua pihak.Selain itu, mereka berpendapat, pengguguran itu juga akan memberi faedah kepada rakyat negara ini yang kerap menggunakan laluan negara berkenaan untuk berurusan.Timbalan Presiden Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB), Datuk Seri Abang Johari Tun Openg berkata, keputusan Brunei menggugurkan tuntutan wilayah ke atas Limbang akan memacu pembangunan di kawasan sempadan itu secara lebih terperinci dan teratur.Katanya, pembangunan yang sedang dirancang kerajaan negeri di kawasan berkenaan seperti pembinaan empangan hidroelektrik Sungai Limbang akan memberi manfaat kepada penduduk di kedua-dua kawasan."Kita menyambut baik pengguguran itu kerana ia jelas memberi faedah dalam jangka masa panjang kepada penduduk di kedua-dua belah negara," katanya di sini hari ini.Beliau berkata demikian selepas menghadiri Majlis Pelantikan dan Upacara Angkat Sumpah Ahli Majlis Daerah Lundu dekat sini.Isu Limbang selama ini meletakkan kedua-dua negara dalam keadaan dilema kerana wilayah itu agak unik kerana memisahkan dua kawasan daratan di Brunei.

Selain masalah persempadanan darat di Limbang, penemuan sumber baru minyak di kawasan seluas 150 kilometer oleh Petronas turut mencetuskan masalah persempadanan maritim kedua-dua negara berjiran itu.Dengan pengguguran itu, ia menyelesaikan isu sempadan dan tuntutan bertindih kedua belah negara yang berlarutan sejak 1995.Bagi Presiden Parti Rakyat Sarawak (PRS), Dr. James Jemut Masing berkata, beliau mengalukan-alukan tindakan Brunei menggugurkan tuntutan mereka ke atas Limbang.Menurutnya, ia akan memudahkan urusan rakyat negara ini yang kerap keluar masuk ke negara berkenaan untuk berurusan."Ia hadiah terbaik kepada Perdana Menteri kerana beliau berjaya menyelesaikan isu tersebut sebelum beliau bersara."Kami berterima kasih dengan kejayaan Abdullah kerana menyelesaikan isu ini yang jelas memberi manfaat kepada rakyat Malaysia," katanya ketika dihubungi hari ini.Presiden Parti Demokratik Progresif Sarawak (SPDP), Datuk Seri William Mawan Ikom pula memberitahu, pengguguran tuntutan itu usaha baik dari kerajaan Brunei untuk membina hubungan yang kukuh dengan kerajaan Malaysia.Katanya, rakyat negara ini akan mendapat manfaat yang sewajarnya daripada pengguguran itu yang membolehkan hak mereka untuk menggunakan laluan di negara berkenaan."Jelas ia menunjukkan petanda baik bagi kedua-dua negara dalam membina hubungan yang kukuh serta memberi manfaat kepada negara masing-masing," katanya.

MASYARAKAT BERAWAN MENARIK PERHATIAN PELANCONG KE MULU PASAL MASALAH TANAH ADAT

MULU - Masyarakat Berawan dari Kampung Long Terawan, Tutoh telah melancarkan kempen kesedaran untuk menarik perhatian pelancong ke Taman Negara Gunung Mulu mengenai masalah rampasan dan pencerobohan tanah adat mereka yang dilakukan oleh Syarikat Borsamulu Resort Sdn. Bhd.

Kempen kesedaran tersebut dibuat di dalam kawasan Taman Negara bermula pada 20 April yang lalu dan beberapa ahli masyarakat Berawan telah mengedarkan risalah mengenai masalah mereka kepada pelancong-pelancong yang mengunjungi Taman Negara tersebut.

Menurut Willie Kajan, salah seorang daripada ahli penduduk Kampung Long Terawan yang mengedarkan risalah tersebut, mengatakan tanah adat milik kaum Berawan yang bersebelahan dengan Taman Negara tersebut telah dirampas oleh Syarikat Borsamulu Resort Sdn. Bhd. dengan tujuan untuk membina tempat peranginan dan padang golf.

Beliau menambah lagi, pihak Jabatan Tanah dan Survei Bahagian Miri telah mengeluarkan sebuah geran hak milik sementara atau Provisional Lease (PL) kepada syarikat tersebut pada tahun 1993 tanpa pengetahuan penduduk kampung di situ.

“Kami hanya mendapat tahu bahawa status PL tersebut telah diubah kepada geran penuh pada tahun 2004, sekali lagi tanpa pengetahuan kami. Perbuatan Jabatan tersebut telah menyebabkan hak ke atas tanah adat kami hilang begitu sahaja”, beliau berkata.

“Masyarakat Berawan telah hidup dan tinggal di kawasan Sungai Tutuh dan Sungai Melinau sebelum pemerintahan Raja-Raja Brooke (1841 – 1946) lagi, dan tanah ini dimiliki mengikut adat-resam secara turun-temurun dari nenek-moyang kami”, tambah beliau.

“Oleh itu, kami merayu kepada anda semua untuk menolong kami menghentikan rompakan tanah adat kami,” kata beliau, Willie turut berharap agar mesej yang ditujukan kepada para pelancong tersebut dapat dibawa oleh mereka sampai ke luar negara.

“Bantulah kami dengan cara menghantar surat bantahan atau melakukan protes secara aman dengan apa cara yang anda mampu lakukan kepada pihak-pihak berkuasa di Sarawak dan Malaysia untuk menuntut supaya tanah adat kami dikeluarkan daripada geran Syarikat Borsamulu Resort Sdn. Bhd.”

Syarikat Borsamulu Resort Sdn. Bhd. Sebenarnya mempunyai kaitan dengan Ketua Menteri Sarawak, Pehin Seri Haji Abdul Taib Mahmud melalui adik beliau iaitu Raziah @ Rodiah Mahmud yang merupakan pemegang syer syarikat tersebut. Sebelum Taman Negara Gunung Mulu diwartakan sebagai Taman Negara, kawasan tersebut merupakan tanah adat milik masyarakat Berawan dan Penan. Tetapi apabila Taman Negara tersebut diwartakan pada tahun 1974 hak masyarakat Berawan dan Penan tidak diperdulikan.

“Nampaknya Kerajaan Negeri Sarawak hanya berminat untuk menjaga dan melindungi haiwan dan tumbuh-tumbuhan di dalam Taman Negara tersebut, tetapi masyarakat kami diabaikan”, kata Willie.

Masyarakat suku kaum Berawan merupakan sebuah suku kaum kecil yang tergolong di dalam suku kaum Orang Ulu di Sarawak.

Tattoo-the iban tatto artist

ARE tattoos just skin deep? No, it's not - at least not in Sarawak where tattoos represent power, honour and experience for tribes including the Iban, Kayan, Kejaman, Punan and Kelabit.

One of the first lessons the 40 BRATs learned when they met tattoo artist Ernesto Kalum was to look beyond the obvious. With his long locks, and dressed in tattered jeans and a singlet, the BRATs were surprised to learn that this 36-year-old man was a worldrenowned tattoo artist - and a law graduate.

He owns the Sarawakian tattoo parlour Borneo Headhunters Tattoo and Piercing in Kuching.

Ernesto is an Iban, and he spoke mostly about traditional Iban tattooing. Indeed, there is a whole lot more to tattoos than what is commonly known. Ernesto said that the Ibans are especially known for their enchanting engravings.

Ernesto told of the journey all young Iban boys aged 10 to 12 go through, with regards to tattooing. He was quick to note that this tradition is not practiced anymore.

Back then, Ernesto explained, the young boys would get tattooed by the older folks. The first tattoo is always the bunga terung, which symbolises the start of a journey referred to as bejalai - a journey where they leave home to explore the ‘world', during which they are said to transform from boy to man.

There is a belief that the eligibility of a man attaining a wife increases with his number of tattoos, Ernesto said. This is because tattoos are symbols of achievement and obstacles that one had encountered throughout one's life. Hence, women often show their sense of curiosity upon the man's return from the bejalai journey.

Over the years, tattoos have become more than just a product of tradition. Ernesto is more than aware of this, considering the fact that he recently organised the International Tattoo Convention 2007 at Bukit Aup, Sibu in Sarawak.

He shared an interesting fact: many visitors to the Convention were foreigners, and of the many people he tattooed, not a single one of them were Iban.

Indeed, like the BRATs found out over the next few days during a street poll on tattoos, the world does have a different view of the art currently.

The efforts by the Dayak Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DCCI) to introduce Dayak Music Awards (DAMA) which was held on 27 September 2008 at Crowne Plaza Riverside Hotel, Kuching in recognition of Dayak musicians – singers, composers and lyricists – were both noble and commendable.

Presented after the style of the most prestigious Grammy Awards, DAMA hopes to inject quality and professionalism among the Dayak musicians. Hitherto, some of the so-called Dayak songs lack originality as they are copied from Malay, Indonesian and Hindustani songs with many of them having Malay words used in the lyrics. Let me give an example: “burong punggok nyabak ka bulan” which should have been “burong tunggok nyabak ka bulan” in Iban; “selindang” should have been “selampai”, etc.

There again the Iban and Malay spellings are mixed up. For instance, “baka kucing enggau cit” should have been “baka kuching enggau chit”. And there are many examples of these mixed-up spellings in CDs, VCDs and DVDs. The Malay spelling does not have “ch”, while the Iban spelling maintains the “ch” in order to differentiate between the systems of spelling.

In an attempt to really raise the quality of Iban songs in particular, a body or a committee should be set up to look into all these “impurities” in Iban songs.

If this body can be set up, then the Dayak music is not only an art and a form of entertainment among the Dayaks, but also it is a big money-spinner. Imagine we have eight million Dayaks throughout Pulau Borneo as possible clients. Some non-Dayak businessmen have seen these prospects and have indeed taken advantage of some of Iban singers especially those in Sibu by paying them about RM600 for a recording. While the Iban singers are only interested in making them “famous” and popular, the non-Dayak businessmen have earned millions of ringgit through the sales of their songs. Again a body should be set up to look after the interests of the singers.

As I said the DCCI’s efforts are commendable and should be given all out support. But sadly, there seems to be lack of support coming from the Iban businessmen and Iban ministers and assistant ministers and the absence of William Mawan, James Masing, Alfred Jabu, Joseph Entulu, Sylvester Enteri, Jelaing Mersat, Francis Harden, Gramong Juna, Peter Nyarok and Douglas Uggah were obvious. Only Michael Manyin, Naroden Majais and Joseph Salang were seen around. Never mind Jabu, but what about the rest? We know Jabu has always against the formation of DCCI and its activities.

If Ahmad Shabery Cheek, minister of information, could come all the way from Kuala Lumpur to attend the musical awards, there was no reason why our ministers could not come. That was the time our singers really needed our support and support is like a horse trading. (You scratch my back, I scratch yours). You may not need them now, come elections times, the Dayak singers are the most wanted commodity. Like in USA, as also elsewhere, including Sarawak, the role of singers in attracting audience during campaigning times is now part of democracy.

Sabah History & Culture

Known as the ‘Land below the Wind’, Sabah on the eastern side of Borneo is home to over 30 different ethnic races with over 80 local dialects. Its title comes from its location; directly beneath the typhoon belt making it free from climatic disturbances. Despite the advent of modernity, tradition and culture still prevail in local lifestyles, especially as a practice to welcome international visitors. A visit to Sabah is indeed a multi-cultural and fascinating experience.

Sabah’s early records indicate that it was broken up into various areas ruled by local chieftains in the early 9th Century. Later, in the 15th Century, it became a part of the Brunei Empire until an American Trader named Moses arrived in the 1880s’ to lease it. From there, it was passed on to an Englishman named Alfred Dent who converted the lease into a cession. The British North Borneo Chartered Company was thus established, ruling over the state until the Japanese occupation during World War II, after which it became a British Crown Colony. In 1963, Sabah joined the coalition of Malaysia.

Sabah’s 2 million residents are a diverse mix of races, with the Kadazan, Bajau and Murut forming the main indigenous groups. There are of course, sizeable populations of Chinese, Malays and Indians who form the majority of Malaysia’s social landscape.

Kadazan-Dusun

The largest indigenous group in Sabah is the Kadazan-Duzun, which makes up a third of the population. They are known as prolific rice-producers, but many have gone into other commercial markets outside their traditional field. They are also known for their colourful customs, including those that involve female priestesses named ‘Bobohizan’. Their most famous festival is the Harvest Festival or ‘Tadau Ka’amatan’, which celebrates a season of good rice harvest.
